THE INTRODUCTORY RITES

When the people are gathered, the Priest approaches the altar with the ministers
while the Entrance Chant is sung.
 When he has arrived at the altar, after making a profound bow with the
ministers, the Priest venerates the altar with a kiss and, if appropriate, incenses the
cross and the altar. Then, with the ministers, he goes to the chair.
 When the Entrance Chant is concluded, the Priest and the faithful, standing, sign
themselves with the Sign of the Cross, while the Priest, facing the people, says:

    The people reply:

HOMILY
Then all sit, and the bishop gives the homily. He begins with the text 14 of the readings from Scripture and then speaks to the people and the candidate about the office of deacon and the meaning and importance of celibacy in the Church.

COMMITMENT TO CELIBACY
After the homily the candidate, if he is to manifest his intention of a commitment to celibacy, stands before the bishop. The bishop speaks to him in these or similar words:
Pres.: By your own free choice you seek to enter the order of deacons. You shall exercise this ministry in the celibate state for celibacy is both a sign and a motive of pastoral charity, and a special source of spiritual fruitfulness in the world. By living in this state with total dedication, moved by a sin¬ cere love for Christ the Lord, you are consecrated to him in a new and special way. By this consecration you will adhere more easily to Christ with an undivided heart; you will be more freely at the service of God and mankind, and you will be more untrammeled in the ministry of Christian conversion and rebirth. By your life and character you will give witness to your brothers and sisters in faith that God must be loved above all else, and that it is he whom you serve in others.

Pres.: Therefore, I ask you: In the presence of God and the Church, are you resolved, as a sign of your interior dedication to Christ, to remain celibate for the sake of the kingdom and in lifelong service to God and mankind?

Candidate: I am.

Pres.: May the Lord help you to persevere in this commitment.

EXAMINATION OF THE CANDIDATE
Pres.: My son, before you are ordained a deacon, you must declare before the people your intention to undertake this office.

Pres.: Are you willing to be ordained for the Church’s ministry by the laying on of hands and the gift of the Holy Spirit?

Pres.: Are you resolved to discharge the office of deacon with humility and love in order to assist the bishop and the priests and to serve the people of Christ?

Pres.: Are you resolved to hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience, as the Apostle urges, and to proclaim this faith in word and action as it is taught by the Gospel and the Church’s tradition ?

Preface.
Pres.: It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. By the anointing of the Holy Spirit, you constituted your only-begotten Son Pontiff of the new and eternal covenant and you established in your ineffable plan that his only priesthood would be perpetuated in the Church. Therefore, your Son, Jesus Christ, not only enriches the Church with a royal priesthood, but also, with fraternal kindness, chooses men who, through the laying on of hands, participate in his sacred ministry. In the name of Christ, they renew the sacrifice of human redemption, serving the faithful the Easter banquet, leading the people in charity, feeding them with the Word and restoring them with the sacraments. Giving your life for yourselves and for the salvation of your brothers, try to resemble the image of Christ himself, and testify, constant, before you, faith and love. Therefore, Lord, with the angels and all the saints, we exalt you, singing joyfully with one voice.

The Priest, with hands extended, says:
Pres.: To you, therefore, most merciful Father, we make humble prayer and petition through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord:

Then he says:
Pres.: The mystery of faith.
And the people continue, acclaiming:
℟.: We proclaim your Death, O Lord,and profess your Resurrection until you come again.

Then the Priest, with hands extended, says:
Pres.: Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the blessed Passion, the Resurrection from the dead, and the glorious Ascension into heaven of Christ, your Son, our Lord, we, your servants and your holy people, offer to your glorious majesty from the gifts that you have given us, this pure victim, this holy victim, this spotless victim, the holy Bread of eternal life and the Chalice of everlasting salvation. Be pleased to look upon these offerings with a serene and kindly countenance, and to accept them, as once you were pleased to accept the gifts of your servant Abel the just, the sacrifice of Abraham, our father in faith, and the offering of your high priest Melchizedek, a holy sacrifice, a spotless victim
